The Legacy of Casa Vega
In 1956, a young and ambitious Rafael “Ray” Vega opened Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks, California. At just 22 years old, Ray took a leap of faith, transforming his dream into a reality. Coming from a family rooted in hospitality—his parents owned the famous Café Caliente on Olvera Street—Ray brought his Mexican heritage to the San Fernando Valley, creating a warm and vibrant space where authentic flavors and heartfelt service came together.
Casa Vega quickly became a beloved community hub, attracting families, friends, and even Hollywood celebrities like Cary Grant and Marlon Brando. Ray had a gift for making everyone feel at home, combining his entrepreneurial savvy with a deep understanding of what people craved: not just delicious food but a place to create memories.

For decades, Ray nurtured Casa Vega with unwavering dedication, turning it into more than just a restaurant—it became a cultural institution. He passed down his values of hard work, hospitality, and the importance of family to his daughter, Maria Christina “Christy” Vega, who grew up immersed in the rhythms of the business.

In 1999, Christy joined the family legacy, bringing her own vision to Casa Vega while honoring her father’s foundation. Over the years, she modernized the restaurant, introducing innovations like outdoor dining and online ordering, especially during the pandemic. Yet, Christy stayed true to the traditions that made Casa Vega iconic—its timeless recipes, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to community. In 2022, under Christy’s leadership, Casa Vega received a James Beard Award as America’s Classic.

Now celebrating nearly 70 years of service, Casa Vega stands as a testament to the Vega family’s passion and resilience. From its humble beginnings to its recognition as a James Beard America’s Classics Award winner, Casa Vega continues to bridge generations, preserving the rich flavors and spirit of Mexican culture for all who walk through its doors.
